The ETC service expands into the area of three big cities.
The ETC service will be available at 146 tollgates altogether from p.m. 15:00 on 23rd July, 2001, announced by Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure and Transport, Japan Highway Public Corporation, Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation and Hanshin Expressway
Public Corporation on 22nd June, 2001.

*By the autumn 2001, the ETC serviceｓ will have been operated at some　600 tollgates all over Japan; by the end of fiscal year 2002, this service will have been available at around 900 tollgates. This number accounts for 70% of all the tollgates in Japan.
Nearly 6000 shops (car-dealers etc.) have accepted applications for SET-UP which means a work to install vehicle's information to an OBE (on-board equipment) in order to use the ETC system.
Some 400 shops have started performing on-line SET-UP by the end of June. We are going to expand this successively..

The service started for general drivers on a part of the expressways in the Chiba district and the Okinawa Prefecture administered by Japan Highway Public Corporation and also a part of the Metropolitan Expressways on March 30, 2001.

On April 24, 2000, the ETC in Japan was put to trial operation by monitors on a part of the expressways in the Chiba district administered by JH (Japan Highway Public Corporation) and a part of the Metropolitan Expressways.
